Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting — most commonly time-restricted eating in an 8–10 hour window — is a legitimate, evidence-supported tool that works primarily by making calorie control easier and aligning eating with circadian biology. Head-to-head trials show it performs about as well as ordinary calorie restriction, not better. For the right person it's a superb adherence tool; for the wrong one, it's a stress multiplier.

What does the trial evidence actually show?
Randomized trials comparing time-restricted eating against continuous calorie restriction find similar weight and metabolic outcomes when calories match. Translation: fasting's main power is behavioral — fewer eating hours usually means fewer calories, with less counting. The circadian component adds a modest independent benefit, especially for earlier eating windows.
Who tends to benefit most?
People who snack late, graze constantly, or want structure without tracking. Insulin-resistant adults often see glucose improvements from a consistent, earlier window — late-night eating opposes circadian glucose control. If a 10-hour window feels liberating rather than restrictive, it's probably your tool.

Who should not fast?
Anyone with a history of disordered eating — fasting structures can reignite restriction cycles. Pregnant and nursing women, type 1 diabetics and anyone on glucose-lowering medication need medical guidance first. Hard-training athletes should protect protein distribution and fuel around sessions rather than forcing long windows.
Does fasting trigger autophagy and longevity effects?
In animal models, extended fasting robustly activates autophagy. In humans doing 16:8 eating, the effect size is unknown — the biomarkers barely exist to measure it. We treat autophagy claims as promising biology, not a proven human outcome, and anchor recommendations to what's measurable: glucose, insulin, lipids and body composition.

Is 16:8 better than 14:10?
The trials show little difference — consistency and total intake dominate. Start with the widest window that still creates structure; tighten only if results and lifestyle both support it.
Does coffee break a fast?
Black coffee has negligible metabolic impact — for the glucose and insulin purposes that matter here, it's fine. Add cream and sugar and you've simply started eating.
Will fasting slow my metabolism?
Daily time-restricted eating doesn't meaningfully lower metabolic rate in trials. Prolonged aggressive restriction of any style can — which is why we monitor body composition and adjust rather than stack restriction on restriction.
Should women fast differently?
Some women report cycle and sleep disruption with aggressive windows; the research is thin but the signal is consistent enough to respect. Gentler windows (12–14 hours) and cycle-aware adjustment are the pragmatic default.
