Metabolic Age
Metabolic age compares how your metabolism performs — resting metabolic rate, body composition, insulin sensitivity, cardiorespiratory fitness — against population averages for each chronological age. A 45-year-old can carry the metabolism of a 60-year-old, or a 32-year-old. Unlike your birthday, metabolic age is trainable: it responds measurably to muscle, movement and metabolic repair.

What is metabolic age?
It's a comparative score: the chronological age at which your measured metabolic profile would be average. If your resting metabolic rate, visceral fat, muscle mass and insulin sensitivity match a typical 58-year-old and you're 45, your metabolic age is 58 — a signal that your engine is aging faster than your calendar.
How is metabolic age different from biological age?
Biological age (like our IBA 2.0 score) integrates aging signals across systems — epigenetic, vascular, behavioral. Metabolic age zooms into one domain: how efficiently your body produces and manages energy. They usually move together, but a metabolic-age gap is often the earliest and most fixable one.

How do we measure it properly?
Cheap scales estimate metabolic age from bioimpedance alone — a rough guess. A proper assessment combines body composition (muscle mass, visceral fat), fasting insulin and glucose, lipid patterns, resting heart rate and VO2 max context. Each input is a lever you can actually pull.
What drives metabolic age up?
Muscle loss is the biggest driver — muscle is metabolically expensive tissue, so losing it slows your resting burn and shrinks your glucose sink. Add visceral fat accumulation, chronic sleep restriction and insulin resistance, and the metabolic engine ages years ahead of the calendar.
How fast can metabolic age improve?
Faster than most expect. Resistance training plus protein rebuilds the muscle engine; insulin sensitivity responds within 8–12 weeks of consistent training and nutrition changes. We baseline, intervene, then retest — so the number you watch is your own trend, not a scale's guess.

Is the metabolic age on my smart scale accurate?
Treat it as entertainment. Bioimpedance-only estimates swing with hydration and skip the markers that matter most — insulin, glucose, lipids. Use it for trends at best; get labs for truth.
Can metabolic age be lower than my real age?
Absolutely — trained, muscular, insulin-sensitive adults routinely score 10–15 years younger. That's the goal state, and it's earned through training and metabolic health, not supplements.
Which single change moves it most?
Resistance training. It rebuilds muscle mass, raises resting burn, and improves insulin sensitivity in one intervention — no other lever touches all three.
How often should I re-measure?
Every 12 weeks during active improvement. Body composition and insulin markers move on that cadence; measuring more often mostly measures noise.
